Did you know that Atlanta is in the top 10 best cities for dog owners in the United States? About 54% of Atlantans own a dog in the city and 40% of them are afraid of loud noises! With Independence Day fast approaching us we have decided to inform you on how to make your pets feels safer using packing materials.

To reduce the impact of the noise and flashes from the fireworks try building them a thunder shelter. Small dark places with familiar toys and bedding will help alleviate their stress. You can build one from scratch with cardboard boxes. If you have a designated kennel/cage for your pet, you can use cardboard boxes or blankets nested around it to mute the sound. Make sure that there is enough room in between the boxes and blankets to allow air circulation. Without proper air flow your pet could overheat.

Here are more tips on how to handle your pets during fireworks/thunderstorms:

  • Don’t try to comfort or scold your dog. By scolding him it reassures him that something is wrong. By praising your dog can reassure him that his behavior is correct and his reactions can become more intense.
  • Try training your dog to settle and focus in a specific part of your home. This can develop into a healthy habit for your dog.
  • If your dog is friendly with other dogs, try hosting a playdate with a non-fearful dog. This can encourage yours to be less influenced by loud conditions.
  • Don’t ignore the fact that your dog has a fear. There are steps you can take to prevent this from happening ever again.

2016 Movers for Mutts

Decatur really is where it’s greater! Inside the Atlanta perimeter is full of color, life and an awesome mix of neighbors, non-profits and soon to be friends. TWO MEN AND A TRUCK Decatur was inspired by the giving character of Decatur, Brookhaven and the surrounding areas. This fall we’re partnering with Taj Ma-hound, Park Pet Supply and VCA’s Peachtree Animal Hospital to help domestic violence pets and their families relocate safely.

If you’re in the Oakhurst neighborhood of Decatur, stop by Taj Ma-hound for sweet treats, dogie presents and even a few surprise neighborhood recommendations for coffee. Pet Park Supply is in the downtown East Atlanta area. Surrounded by local street art, Pet Park Supply has holistic, healthy alternatives to pet nutrition. VCA’s Peachtree Animal Hospital location serves the greater Chamblee area with multiple locations.

Our beneficiary, Ahimsa House, is all about helping families break free from domestic violence situations. We understand the need to help out family pets too! Oftentimes, pets involved in violent homes try to protect their owners from harm by laying over the children or mother during violent episodes. Upon hearing this, our Decatur staff’s hearts broke for these brave pets. We’re amazed at the reliance of any pet who’d take the heat for their loved ones!
